Vision Boards
Dare to Dream
What is a vision board? - It’s a space, a surface, a canvas used to capture and render the images of our dreams, wants, and desires. It’s the first step in crystallizing the objects of your imagination into the real world.
As a powerful tool, vision boards are used to focus our attention on the destination of our dreams. Through vivid imagery and creative visualization you can create mindful clarity, invoke deep emotion and influence your subconscious thoughts to bring about a manifestation of what you desire. Some call it the Law of Attraction but in essence, it’s a means to realize your dreams.
Who needs one and why? - Dreams are at the heart of every one of us and yet as important as they are, many people eventually surrender theirs to the complacency of a predictable and accepting life or to a seemingly insurmountable hardship. This surrendering is where a self limiting prophecy finds its roots; often coming at the cost of self fulfillment, true connectedness, and/or joyous passions. Soon enough, we forget how to dream with abandonment, how to draw to us the things that make us feel light and gifted. In fact, countless numbers of people will unwittingly compound this self limiting prophecy with thoughts of negativity. For example, someone recently shared this clever quote with me, “Worrying is like praying for something you don’t want.” Think about it, is this something you practice? Do you dream about the wrong things? Do you dream at all or do you dream with the richness of possibility?
Change your thoughts, change your life. Creating a vision board is for the person who is ready for a future filled with possibillities. Are you that person?
How do you make one? – Oh, this is the fun part! Look through magazines and cut out pictures of the things you want, places you want to go, and people who look like they are doing what you want to or being the person you want to be. Check out others sources too like the internet, newspaper, brochures. Collect letters, words, or phrases for mantras or personal affirmation statements. Collect small things like fabrics, sand, or basically anything that will symbolize your desire. Pull them all together and begin to build a collage that is as unique as you are. Let it shout out to your senses with vivid color, texture and meaningful content. Let it be adventurous, inspiring, purposeful, and reflective. Let it be you, the limitless you.
Some people prescribe to the idea that there are three types of vision boards: 1) The “I know what I want”, 2) The “Opening and Allowing” (for those who need to develop clarity), and 3) The “Theme” and that you should keep this in mind from the onset. I think the most important thing is to just get started. For many, their boards will begin to evolve to meet the intentions of the creator. Also remember, vision boards can be ever evolving, you can have more than one, and they are for meant for your dreams only (not anyone else’s – let them make their own!).
How do you use it? – After you have sorted through your imagery and symbolism, arranged it so it can be displayed in a way that speaks to you, and affixed it to a surface, perhaps a piece of cardboard, cork board or something that’s manageable, find a place to put it that gives you daily exposure. Avoid places that invite audiences who are inclined to critique or judge. Now every day, make the time to glaze at and consider your vision. Take it in and let it fill you with the resonating energy that will breathe life into your dreams and passions. Meditate on the images you have selected, affirm your desires and express gratitude towards the force that moves you. Update your images as you grow, keeping yourself ever alive with eager emotion and thought. Dare to do this and you may find dreams do come true.
